A specific kind of energy hits East Lansing when temperatures climb above 60 degrees. The heavy coats disappear, the Red Cedar River starts humming, and the campus transforms into a massive park.

Whether you’re looking to study under a tree or get your blood pumping, here are the top spots to enjoy the sunshine near Victory East Lansing.

1. Relax at the Beal Botanical Garden

Just a short walk or bike ride from Victory, the Beal Botanical Garden is the oldest continuously operated university botanical garden in the U.S. It’s a literal “outdoor laboratory,” but for students, it’s the ultimate zen zone. It’s the perfect place to bring a blanket, a book, and enjoy some quiet time surrounded by over 2,000 plant species.

2. Walk, Run, or Bike the Lansing River Trail

The Lansing River Trail is one of the area’s best-kept secrets. It winds right through campus along the Red Cedar River, stretching for over 20 miles and connecting East Lansing to downtown Lansing and beyond.

  • Pro Tip: If you want a scenic route, hop on the trail near the MSU Library and head west toward Rotary Park to see the city’s urban beach and light displays.

3. Picnic at Patriarche Park

Located just north of the Victory Burcham properties, John M. Patriarche Park is a local favorite. With 40 acres of space, it’s great for a pickup game of baseball, a round of tennis, or a group picnic. The park is often buzzing with community energy and is a great spot to feel like a true East Lansing local.

4. Visit the MSU Horticulture Gardens & 4-H Children’s Garden

If you want the most “Instagrammable” spot on campus, this is it. The Horticulture Gardens are stunning in late spring and summer. From the rose gardens to the whimsical Children’s Garden, it’s a beautiful place to wander when you need a mental break from finals or work.

5. Evening Vibes in Downtown East Lansing

As the sun goes down, the outdoor dining scene heats up. Grab an iced coffee at Blue Owl or enjoy patio seating at one of the many restaurants along Albert Ave. The city often hosts “Play in the Park” events and outdoor movies in Valley Court Park, just a few blocks from the Victory properties.

Live Where the Action is at Victory East Lansing, we pride ourselves on being in the heart of everything. Whether you’re living at 635 Abbot, 129 Burcham, or our Burcham Drive community, you’re never more than a few minutes away from East Lansing’s best outdoor escapes.
